Is living in the New York City metro area as expensive as commonly thought (not necessarily Manhattan)?

That all depends on where exactly you'd be living, as well as the type of apartment (studio, one bedroom, etc) and whether or not they'd be sharing. I'd say that the rent in the outer boroughs is at least $1,000 per month, and that doesn't always include utilities.
