What is a big hairless tan spider?

I live in so. california, opened my car door to find a tan hairless spider about 4inches. it looked like a Tarantula but i have never heard of one that had no hair. it fell to the ground i ran in the house to grab something to catch it in. by the time i got out it was up under the car. any ideas on what it is??? sorry no picture.
