What was up with Yugoslavia?

In social studies cl, we're learning about the cold war. I don't understand why-since yugoslavia was already communist-it didn't sign into the pact with the Soviet Union and Russia and them. Wouldn't it be better? A huge, powerful body guard? Well if you, know, i'd appreciate it. If not, well, food for thought? Thank you!
