Husband attacked my new partner with a sledgehammer he is now in custody will he get custodial sentence?

My husband and I are going through a divorce and have a 3 year old son. I have suffered domestic violence and he cheated on me several times hence leaving him. Yesterday he came to my home and walked in and attacked my new partner with a mini sledge hammer in front of our son. Had I not managed to get him of him he would have killed him. The police were called and he is in custody we are simply waiting to hear the charges. He split my partners head open it needed to be glued together he has a black eye busted lip broken teeth and lost a lot of blood. What will this sbag get any thoughts would be great. The police have not found the weapon however we have 3 witnesses to verify that he did use this, plus medical evidence states his injuries were caused by an object.
