What is the point of gothic?

i watch tv shows like 48 hours/investigation shows that talk about 'gothic' teenagers and the stupid things they do. i saw gothic kids in high school or at the mall. my question is what about gothic draws people in? why do those kids think they find themself wearing face paint, a black outfit or baggy black pants? its ugly and weird. why do misfit kids like that stupid crap?
